Fortunately, it’s become a lot easier in recent years to paint ceilings thanks to new paints and tools. One of my favorites is Wagner’s SMART Roller because the handle extends to hold your paint so you don’t have to constantly step off a ladder to reload your roller. In fact, I can paint a standard 8’ ceiling without even needing a ladder!

Prep for Painting

Start your paint project by prepping your surface. With ceilings, this usually means placing dropcloths on horizontal surface and the floor, and removing or taping around light fixtures and air vents.

Now, put the fill tube into your paint can and pull back on the plunger to fill the roller with paint.

Pro Tips

• Stir your paint - paint sticks are provided for a reason
• Stir the can of paint every 15 or so minutes, it helps keep the color pigmentation evenly distributed

I highly recommend that you use a paint that’s designed specifically for ceilings because it can help minimize brush and roller lines. The ones I like applies with a slight purple tint that fades to white as the paint dries and lets me see if I’ve missed any spots.

As your roller gets dry, just pull the trigger on the Wagner SMART roller’s handle to release more paint.

Since the SMART roller can cover around 70sf with one fill, you’ll find that your painting only takes about half as long as it does with a traditional roller. That makes it easy for me to knock out several rooms at a time!

The last step is to finish the edges with a detail brush (this is the only time I find myself on a ladder, thankfully!).

Pro Tip:

• If you’re also painting the walls, it’s easiest to paint the ceiling first, then paint the walls after.

Clean up is easy:

• Connect the SMART roller to the fill tube and push any remaining paint back into the can.
• Unclip the roller arm and remove it - I throw the paint roller cover away and use a new roller with every paint job. But you can rinse the roller cover for reuse.
• Lastly, continue to flush the handle with water until it's clean and the water runs clear.
